El Niño expected to pressure reservoir levels in the North and Northeast in 2016

If levels remain as they, by the end of the month they will be the lowest they have been in January in the past 15 years   Reservoir levels in the first days of 2016 show opposing trends in the various sub-markets. El Niño continues to produce heavy rainfall in the South and Southeast, and […]

Reservoir levels in the South are at the second highest level of the past 15 years

Recent heavy rains in the South have had a direct impact on increasing the levels of the submarket’s reservoirs. By October 25, reservoirs in the South had reached the second highest level of the past 15 years, behind only the level measured in October 2001.

Reservoirs in the Southeast start the month of October with twice the volume of January

By late September, reservoir levels were down in all submarkets. The largest monthly reduction was in the Northeast, where reservoirs dropped 26 percentage points, as shown below.   Levels in the Southeast and the Northeast, the regions with the largest reservoirs in the country, were down 2 and 5 percentage points respectively. However, unlike reservoirs […]

Study: What would be the level of Northeast reservoirs if not for the wind-farms?

The analysis above is based on the following premises: The red line is the reservoir level measured each month; The blue line is the level these reservoirs would be at if it were not for wind-farms; This analysis assumed that the only substitute for wind power would be hydro. The year started out with Northeast […]

Reservoir Levels – End of August

Compared to July 2015, reservoirs levels in all sub-markets dropped in August. The Southeast is starting September with its reservoirs at 34% of their maximum capacity. However, as reported in last week’s Panorama Semanal, reservoir levels in the National Integrated System are above what they were last year. This is due to icnreased volumes in […]

Reservoir levels in the month of August

By August 10, reservoir levels in most of the country (except the NE) had recovered somewhat compared to August 2014. Levels in the Southeast, the largest submarket, rose 6.6 percentage points. Nevertheless, reservoirs are below the average of the past 15 years, which is 58% of their maximum capacity. Reservoirs in the South and North […]

Why did the CMSE switch off more than 2,000 MW in thermal power?

In early August the CMSE (Committee to Monitor the Electrical Sector) announced it would switch off thermal plants with a unit cost of R$ 600,00/MWh, as published here. This decision was based on a study the National System Operator submitted to the CMSE, with the minimum storage levels expected at the end of the dry […]

The PLD (spot price) at R$ 119,00/MWh: what is the relationship between reservoir levels and the energy load during the dry season?

Flows went up in July in the Southeast and Southern systems, and in the first week of August, the PLD in the Southeast reached the lowest level of the year. Prices actually started to drop in June. If we look at the behavior of the PLD since 2012, we see valleys in some months of […]

Reservoir levels – end of June

Reservoir levels in June remained essentially stable in all sub-markets, with the exception of the South, where storage levels went from 36.9% to 61.1%. Confirming the weekly storage chart, the largest variation in the month happened in the South, where reservoir levels increased 25.2 percentage points. According to the latest forecast of end-of-month reservoir levels […]

Reservoir Levels

On June 12 2015, reservoir levels in the Northeast, South and North were below where they had been on the same day in 2014. Reservoirs in the Northeast, which has the second largest combined reservoir capacity in the country, were down 9 percentage points compared to the same time last year. The largest difference was […]
